Position Description - Software Development Engineer
The position involves the following tasks:
  • Develop new, and maintain existing, Business BASIC BBx/BBj, Java, and Javascript code for business contexts
  • Develop new, and maintain existing, web server infrastructure based on the Jetty web server (servlets, services, deployment technology, and custom BASIS features)
  • Use Git and Subversion configuration management systems for source code control
  • Isolate and correct software issues in existing code (BBx/BBj, Java, and Javascript)
  • Work closely with our Design, Internals, UI, and Quality Engineers as well as our technical writing, professional services, and technical support teams
  • Improve our development tools focusing on a customer-centric approach
  • Code and test software based upon software specifications and design using unit tests
  • Estimate your own effort to complete a design feature
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in existing software
  • Read and understand simple software requirements and design documents as part of implementing the design
  • Write and maintain technical documentation describing program development, logic, coding, changes, and corrections
  • Investigate internal and external problem reports as part of the issue resolution lifecycle
  • Occasional travel to meet BASIS and/or customer needs
The employee we are looking for has:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field
  • Experience with the Eclipse IDE or another IDE of similar complexity
  • Experience with Git and Subversion configuration management systems
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate users' needs and troubleshoot problems
  • Attention to detail while supporting multiple systems and applications
  • A working knowledge of object-oriented programming
  • Fluency with spoken and written English
  • A passion for developing quality software products
  • A flexible, open-minded, and creative approach to software development
  • A willingness and ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • An interest and a willingness to work as a member of a distributed development team
  • Effective listening and speaking skills to communicate with customers, support personnel, and other engineers working on the same or related projects
  • Team and customer interpersonal skills to get along and work well with others
  • The ability to coordinate actions with other employees’ and customers’ actions
It is desirable for you to have (these are pluses):
  • Knowledge of BASIS’ Business BASIC BBx© and BBj© languages
  • Knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, and general ledger business functions
  • A history of Business BASIC, Java, and Javascript development
  • Experience developing software for accounting, distribution, warehouse, CRM, payroll or similar business contexts
  • Experience creating and analyzing software requirements
  • Experience in user interface design
  • Experience implementing software based on a design document or designer directions
  • Familiarity implementing user interfaces in Java Swing, SWT, JavaScript, HTML, or CSS
  • An understanding of user-centric thinking and the ability to translate that into code
  • Fluency in spoken and written languages beyond English (our products are sold and supported internationally)
  • Skill in public speaking (presenting and teaching)
